Self-aligning Ball Bearings
Self-aligning ball bearings include two rows of rolling balls with a common sphered raceway in the out ring. These bearings are designed to tolerate angular misalignment of the shaft relative to the housing. Compared to other rolling bearing types, self-aligning ball bearings generate less friction, which enables them to operate at cooler temperatures, even at high speeds.

This ball bearing type is highly recommended when it becomes difficult to align the shaft and housing and when the shaft tends to flex. The outer ring of this bearing has a spherical raceway whose center of curvature aligns with that bearing. Besides, the axis of the inner ring, balls, and cage of the bearing can deflect to some extent around the center of the bearing. Pressed steel cages are generally used in this type of ball bearing. Due to small contact angles, the axial load capacity of this bearing is relatively low. Under normal loads, the permissible dynamic misalignment ranges between 0.07 to 0.12 radians (4 to 7 degrees).
However, such an angle may not be possible depending on the surrounding structure.
