Selection and function of roller bearing grease

Aug 04, 2021

Improper lubrication accounts for 36% of the causes of premature failure of tapered roller bearings. Usually purpose greases cannot meet the needs of variety special bearing applications, and using only one or more general purpose greases to meet all bearing applications can cause problems that far outweigh the benefits of uniform grades. Bearing application conditions are very diverse, and correct lubrication requires that grease should match bearing application conditions.

ROLLING MILL BEARINGS

The roller bearing grease is the basis for ensuring smooth, worry-free operation and maximum reliability of bearings, even under the most extreme working conditions. Grease will prevent contaminants from entering bearings, buffering impact loads and preventing corrosion. In practical application, the selection of suitable grease is the basic condition for obtaining the maximum service life of bearings.

Correct selection of lubricants include the type and size of tapered roller bearings, temperature, load, speed, and expected service life and supplementary lubrication cycle.

As the temperature is affected by lubrication, speed, load, and environment, the median values in the table represent only approximate temperature ranges. The role of bearing lubrication Lubrication has an important impact on the fatigue life and friction, wear, temperature rise, vibration and so on of rolling bearings. Without normal lubrication, bearings cannot work. Good lubrication of tapered roller bearing is the effective measure to reduce bearing friction and wear. In addition, the lubrication of bearings has many functions, such as heat dissipation, rust prevention, sealing, impact mitigation and so on.

FV bearings also pay great attention to the selection of grease. Their goal is to select the most suitable grease to achieve the maximum life of rolling mill bearings such as four row taper roller bearings, spherical roller bearings, cylindrical roller bearings etc.

The function of bearing lubrication can be briefly described as follows:

A. An oil film is formed between two rolling or sliding surfaces in contact to separate the two surfaces and reduce friction and wear of the contact surfaces.

B. When oil lubrication is used, especially when circulating oil lubrication, oil mist lubrication and oil spray lubrication are used, the lubricating oil can take away most of the friction heat inside the bearing and play an effective heat dissipation role.

C. When using grease lubrication, it can prevent external dust and other foreign matters from entering the tapered roller bearing and play a sealing role.

D. Lubricants can prevent corrosion of metals.

E. Prolong the fatigue life of tapered roller bearings.
