Comparison of Commonly Used Materials for Rolling Mill Bearings

Rolling mill bearings have to withstand relatively large rolling forces during use (contact stress is generally in the range of 1000~4000MPa). In order to reduce or avoid friction between the inside of the bearing and the mating surface, the rolling mill bearing material needs to have the following characteristics: high hardness and wear resistance, good performance, high contact fatigue strength, stable structure, easy processing, etc.

Commonly used rolling mill bearing materials:

1. High-carbon chromium-bearing steels are used more frequently: mainly are GCr15 (100Cr6), GCr15SiMn, GCr18Mo (100CrMo7) . High-carbon chromium bearing steels are the most commonly used bearing steels, which account for more than 80%.

The above three grades are the most commonly used for rolling mill bearings. The performance of the first two is basically the same. GCr15SiMn has better hardenability than GCr15 due to the increase in silicon and manganese content. GCr15 is only suitable for small and medium-sized bearings, while GCr15SiMn can be used for large bearings. However, due to poor impact toughness, GCr15SiMn's application range is also greatly restricted. Due to its high hardenability and impact toughness, GCr18Mo can well make up for the shortcomings of GCr15SiMn, and is used in applications where large bearings are subjected to large impact loads. In addition to the above three grades, there are also ZGCr15, GCr15SiMo and so on.

2. Carburized steel: Carburized steel is low-carbon steel. The carbon content is generally 0.1% to 0.25%. After heat treatment processes such as carburizing, its surface hardness reaches HRC60 or more, and its wear resistance and fatigue strength are good. The material has good toughness inside, so it can withstand impact loads. The more commonly used material codes are: G20Cr2Ni4A, G20CrNi2MoA (SAE4320H).
